City Vredendal

Vredendal in the Western Cape province of South Africa, in the north of the Olifants River Valley and in the south the Namaqualand occupying a prime location for nature lovers. With its location on the banks of the Olifants River and Mediterranean climate, it is an oasis of green.

Situated between two contrasts; rugged mountains and sandy plains, see the largest numbers of different succulents in the world. An intriguing irrigation system provides land and vineyards in the area with water.

Vredendal is also part of the Olifants River wine route that goes along Lutzville and Westcorp. Wine lovers can enjoy the 2 exquisite wine cellars is Vredendal and you can visit many small picturesque wineries on the wine trail.

The town is progressive and modern, has an airport and shopping malls, numerous restaurants and is the perfect base for trips to Namaqualand, the West Coast and the Cederberg. Protected by the majestic mountains like the Gifberg, Maskam and Koebee Peaks, which raises the image of a safe and magical place where you get away from the crowds.

You visit Vredendal mainly for its diverse wildlife and the Wild Flower season (Aug-Sept) when the spring conjures up a feast of wild flowers. From here you can easily visit some surrounding areas for a more prosperous spectacle.

In and around Vredendal are numerous hiking trails. The Matzikama Local Municipality Eco-Park is such a place where you see botanical gardens during the walk but also become acquainted with the bird life and on the way you naturally enjoy the beautiful views of the Gifberg Mountains. It is a park where you just go in when its Wild Flower season and the magnificent colours will overwhelm you.

Strandfontein on the Atlantic Ocean is about 60km away and Lamberts Bay is about 140 km and Clanwilliam is 80 km away. Places where beautiful nature reserves lie.
