City Underberg

Underberg is a small town situated at the foot of the majestic Southern Drakensberg Mountains in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Originated in 1917 when the track ahead of Pietermaritzburg area reached under the 1904 high Hlogoma Peak. It is also a sort of trading post for people who come from the Sani Pass in Lesotho.

A cosy and busy place despite this district lives mainly on agriculture. Especially with Easter when the Splashy Fen Music Festival takes place and hundreds of people move to Underberg to enjoy a nice Easter weekend with music, art, food and drinks.

-Garden Castle State Forest, located in the southernmost tip of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg park which also belongs to Bushman's Nek Valley. It is a reserve of 35 000 hectares, which is dominated by the Rhino, a rock formation in the shape of a rhinoceros.

-The Himeville Nature Reserve, an area of ​​104 hectares in size. It is a must for trout anglers and nature lovers.

-The Mzimkhulu Wilderness area, a natural area which is west of Underberg on the part of Lesotho. Here there is the rock formations part of a World Heritage site and you can take exciting hikes.

-The Swamp Nature Reserve, located west of the Garden Castle State Forest and a field as the name suggests, it protects a large upland marsh. Located close to Himeville Nature Reserve where the protected blue swallow and the Cape Parrot can surprise you by appearing as fast as your lens can shutter.

-The Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a park next to the beautiful nature also has numerous old rock paintings to be admired. The oldest painting is about 2400 years old. Many paintings depict, dancing, hunting, fighting and people eating.
