City St. Lucia

St. Lucia is located at the warm Indian Ocean and the unique St Lucia estuary in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The village is a kind of resort located in the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park, and this game reserve is home to the Big 4. You can also see the Big 5, so to speak, around the corner of St. Lucia, in this very beautiful region! Formerly St. Lucia was a real fishing village but today it is all about tourism, where fishing still continues to play an important role.

Because of the tropical climate you can visit St. Lucia throughout the year. It has kilometres of beaches where you can sunbathe and where you can swim all year round in the warm waves of the Indian Ocean (something where the dolphins love). You can go canoeing, scuba diving, sailing, snorkelling, whale watching in season from May to December, or a boat cruise to see hippopotamus and crocodiles. You can go on excursions to see the turtles between November and March and go horseback riding along the coastline.

St. Lucia Lake with its fishing is one of the best fishing spots in Africa. You can go there yourself or book one of the excursions. Where water and fish are there are of course also birds, which you can spot endlessly. In addition, you can take stunning sundowner cruises in search of all the other animals that use the water to move there or to quench their thirst... Go in search of the Nile crocodile and the hippopotamus, black rhino, buffalo, elephant, leopard, waterbuck, kudu, nyala, impala, duiker and reedbuck and many others that are not mentioned.

You can walk kilometres along the long coast, through the vegetated dunes or at the estuary, always enjoying the beautiful nature of KwaZulu-Natal.

Excursions in the beautiful Zululand are a must, because as it is here it can still give insight into the lifestyle of the proud tribe of South Africa. Their arts and crafts can be found everywhere in the city centre, with stalls where you can buy handmade products e.g. wicker baskets, wooden figurines and reed mats. Visit one of the Zulu villages and discover the daily life of these friendly and hospitable people, who like to do their traditional dance arts for you. Also look at our day trips.

Just before the entrance of the park is the St Lucia Crocodile Centre. This was set up to ensure preservation of the Nile Crocodiles. In addition to the Nile crocodile you can still admire a number of other species of crocodiles and various snakes. Information is given when there is an exhibition, a gift shop and a restaurant.

St. Lucia has several small (souvenir) shops, (fish) restaurants and shops where fish and / or surf supplies are sold. Markets with stalls and fresh local products can be found here too. St. Lucia is located about 600 kilometres from Johannesburg and 300km from the city of Durban, the nearest "real" town.

St. Lucia is a lovely place for a great vacation; you can walk safely in the village but beware ... because hippos are sometimes in the streets of the village!

And the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve, Sodwana Bay and Cultural Zulu villages is 'Just around the Corner' which is versatile and it has everything needed for a South Africa vacation that you could wish for.
