City Somerset West

Somerset West is located at the foot of the Helderberg Mountains in the Western Cape. The nice Mediterranean climate and the relatively short distance to Cape Town (45 km), the sea in Strand and Gordon's Bay, the beautiful Winelands and mountains makes Somerset West a popular place for tourists from around the world. Also historic Stellenbosch is just a short drive away...

Somerset West is named after the British Governor Lord Charles Somerset in 1819 after farmers of the estate Vergelegen asked permission to build a church where the town slowly grew around. In 1850 the term west was added to give no confusion in the Eastern Cape side where they have Somerset East.
