City Riebeek Kasteel

Riebeek Kasteel is one of the oldest towns in South Africa, located in the heart of the Riebeeck Valley in the beautiful Western Cape Province. With Cape Town about 80 kilometres away from the Swartland it is a sought after area for the Kapenaar (people of the Cape) and people traveling from "All over the World".

In this beautiful Mediterranean valley you will also find the sister Riebeek West, both named after the captain of the native expedition to Paardeberg Mountain in 1661; Jan van Riebeeck. The valley with its fertile land attracted more and more farmers progressively and in 1900 there was a church and the adjacent Royal Hotel, the oldest hotel in South Africa. You can go here just to relax on the wide sidewalk, have a drink and you immediately think back to the settlers. A lot has not changed here over time!

Now you will not only find farms, but also cosy shops, walkways and galleries, as the village attracts many artists like painters and writers to this picturesque place of aesthetic beauty with still an everyday look, a look that is reminiscent of Tuscany in Italy. Beautiful full bodied red wines, delicious olives and cosy bistros that will leave an impression. Inspiration for artistic minds there is no shortage of I would say ... The stunning backdrop of the village, the Castle Mountain ensures the protection of crops and beautiful holiday snaps. Visit the "Vlock Casteel" at the foot of Kasteelberg Mountain Ridge where you can sample products from the farm, from olive oil to fruits and everything in between and accompanying. Put some time aside for it!

And in such a beautiful area like Swartland it is wonderful for hiking and there are also plenty of Hiking trails and mountain bike trails.

Festival lovers take into account the natural events calendar. In May, there is the olive festival, Shiraz and art weekends in October and MedFest in March, where they celebrate wine, olives, art and culture of the Swartland. Alas, there is something to celebrate every day in the magnificent Riebeek Kasteel.
