Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve

After just an hour's drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria, you can mingle with the rhinos and lions at the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve. This is a perfect sanctuary for a game drive just 40 kilometres north-west of Johannesburg (near Krugersdorp). The park has three of the infamous Big Five: lion, rhino and buffalo. Furthermore you can see hippos, cheetahs, crocodiles, the rare wild dogs and more than 20 species see beautiful antelopes.

The reserve is about 1200 hectares and is located in the so-called Cradle of Humankind in Gauteng province. Started with only two white rhinos in 1985, but now you'll find more than 600 animals of 30 different wild species. You can explore the park on a game drive with an experienced guide in an open safari vehicle or car.

In 1999, an extraordinary discovery was made in the park by one of the visitors: a young lion that was entirely white in colour! They are not albino here because the lion has not red but blue eyes; the white colour is caused by a gene defect. Since the animal has no camouflage, he cannot hunt and therefore not naturally survive in the wild. The cub was brought up by the staff of the Rhino and Lion Park. The special white lion is there for visitors to admire.

At the park you will find a kiosk, swimming pool, braai places to bbq, restaurant, playground and the Crocodile Pub, where you can spot crocodiles while enjoying a drink. From the so-called "vulture hide" you can view the large quiet vultures and hopefully take beautiful pictures. At a fee, you can pet cubs, young tigers or cheetahs, and take a picture with them (depending on the young animals available at the time of visit).

On Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays there are snakes at 14:30 on display, and subsequently you can attend an informative chat about cheetahs. Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays lions are conducted at 13:00. The facilities at the park are open daily until 16:00.
