Reactions Train Trips

December 2012

Reactions on trip with the Shongololo-express:

My travel agent 'Zuid-Afrika Specialist' gave me all the information I needed. They were very helpful with any queations I had.

My first booking was for a one person cabin with bathroom and toilet in the corridor. I was lucky I could be upgraded, particularly since bathroom and toilet were in one compartment and had to be shared with alle other cabins in the carriage. That would have been inconvenient.

The public areas, as well as the cabins I may add, were extremely clean.

Information, coordination and contents of the tours were clear. It is difficult not to forget to check the board every time one passes it, but that was my own responsibility.

It was my first time in South Africa and I was curious to learn about the country. The information our drivers/guides told us I found most interesting. However, because groups changed per day information was sometimes given twice. More detailed information about what it is like to be a South African at the moment would have been appreciated.

The food, quality and quantity, was excellent. Really amazing what the cooks could do on a train.

Touring vehicles were alright, no complaints theren.

As far as the touring experiences are concerned: one sees a lot in a short time, but nothing in detail. That is the consequence of this round-the-country trip. Personally I could to with fewer days looking for wild animals and more days going into the history of South Africa, but I am aware that is not everybody's choice.

The tour of Soweto opened my eyes to the country. Since reading a book about it with my 2nd grade students of English I have always thought it was kind of a suburb. Never realized it is a complete town. A good experience.

Suggestions: in information in newspapers and guidebooks I read that staying overnight in a township and/of making a cycle trip through Soweto is on offer. For me that would have been an option on a par with a stay at a lodge in a wild park.

Would I recommend Shongololo? Yes, for the experience of getting to know the whole country in one holiday. No, if you want more detailed knowledge of life in South-Africa. Yes, you get your value for money, when you calculate how much is included. No, if you want a cabin en-suite, because that pushes the price up quite a bit.

All the same, I had a very good holiday, thanks to you and your fantastic staff. I enjoyed very much travelling with you all.

Yours sincerely,

Catharina Hulsebosch
