Midmar Dam Nature Reserve

In KwaZulu-Natal, you will find a well-known, well-marked arts and crafts route, just an hour's drive from Durban. This route is called the Midlands Meander. You can visit more than 100 places on the Midlands Meander - ranging from art studios to country pubs. The route starts in Hilton, a picturesque village just north of Pietermaritzburg. Nearby is the Natal Railway Museum, very popular with steam enthusiasts.

Continue to Howick and the 100 meter high Howick Falls. Visit the Midmar Dam with its numerous water activities such as sailing and boating. In a game park of 1000 hectares, you will find rhinos and zebras, plus a wide range of antelope and birds. North of the dam, at Lion River, lays the Mandela Monument. He was arrested here in 1962 and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment.
