Madikwe Game Reserve

Madikwe Game Reserve is one of the largest game reserves in South Africa and is malaria free. The 75 000-hectare wildlife sanctuary located at the Botswana border about 20 kilometres from Gaborone and is 3.5 hours' drive from Johannesburg and has an excellent wildlife.

Madikwe has as Operation Phoenix which started its origins in 1991. More than 8 000 animals of 28 different species, including elephant, rhino, giraffe, buffalo and spotted hyena, were transferred to the Madikwe Game Reserve. Operation Phoenix has made Madikwe an important area for eco-tourism. The game reserve offers game drives of very good quality and also creates employment and opportunities for socio-economic development for the local population.

What is special about this game reserve is its location in the transition area from Bushveld to the Kalahari sands which means it is interspersed with grasslands with trees and shrubs. This unique location animal and plant species from both ecosystems in the park can be found. In the Madikwe Game Reserve 66 different mammals and over 300 species of birds can be spotted. Besides the famous Big Five there are giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, hyenas, wildebeest, kudu and many types of antelopes in the reserve. But buck species live in the park that can survive well in the dry Kalahari conditions such as the gemsbok.

In the summer months (October to April), it can be very hot in the park while in winter it can be pleasant in the day, but at night very cold. Most rain falls from December - February and often at the end of the day in heavy showers.

You can only enter the park if you have a reservation at one of the private lodges in the park. It is only allowed to drive to the lodge with your own car; all safaris are in jeeps with experienced rangers. The safaris can be done during the day and also at night. There is also the possibility to book a walking safari (bushwalking), obviously accompanied by experienced rangers.

All accommodation in the reserve is of excellent quality (4 and 5-star). You can stay in one of the most beautiful lodges or opt for a luxury tent.
