City Louis Trichardt

Louis Trichardt also known as Makhado, is located in the Limpopo province at the foot of the Soutpansberg Mountains. It is a place in the Lowveld with a subtropical climate where litchi, bananas, mangoes and nuts thrive. The picturesque farming village originated here like so many villages in this area by the Voortrekkers.

Louis Trichardt, bound for Mozambique, put his camp here in 1783. Before he moved further to the north other pioneers settled here, after a fierce battle with the Venda's who lived here. The Schoemansdal Open Air Museum shows you how it was in those days when the first pioneers arrived here.

Louis Trichardt is a small place but important because of its location, especially for those who are on their way to the Kruger National Park. The village itself also has something to offer.

The Soutpansberg Mountains was named this way because there is a large salt lake located at the western slopes which has forests where flora and fauna are varied and diverse. The beautiful and unusual baobab grows here in the hot inhospitable terrain, with a backdrop of the beautiful mountains. Numerous raptors and falcons as well as rare birds of Africa can be spotted here. And it is also the place to go looking for the Leopard!

Just outside the village is the Ben Lavin Nature Reserve where you can enjoy mountain biking, hiking, and you can go on a game drive and if there is time on the road you may have time to visit one of the many fruit and nut farms.

The Blouberg Nature Reserve just outside Louis Trichardt is a special natural area. It has a bird list of over 225 birds, so it is not uncommon to have 1 day to see more than 100 different ones. It has the largest population of Cape vultures and spotting one is almost certain!

Right in the heart of the Soutpansberg Mountains is the holy lake - Lake Fundudzi- of the Venda's. Mythical stories about ghosts ensure that rituals are first visitors to please the gods and crocodiles. But for a spectacular view of the lake you have to be on one of the surrounding mountains. You would then need permission to visit the lake and you must take into account the customs of the locals.

Also in this area is the Langjan Nature Reserve where you can see the magnificent herds of gemsbok and of course all kinds of birds, because that show is not limited to one area.

Do you love the beautifully coloured rugs and fabrics of the Venda and Shangaan? Then visit the 'Madi a Thava' project where you can buy the most beautiful souvenirs.

The true hiker in you is obviously going to run the Mabudashango hiking trail, good shoes and conditions are required for the trip as it is 53 kilometres long and 4 days hiking! This wonderful hike in the Magoebaskloof is about the holy land of the Venda and along the Lake Fundudzi a place far from any tourists!

For the golfer there is of course a game on the Louis Trichardt course, one of the finest golf courses in Limpopo with beautiful trees and the grass is in very good condition throughout the year.
