Lion Park Johannesburg

Please note: This park is known to take part in the so-called canned hunting industry. Petting wild animals is not natural and is often accompanied by (very) poor treatment of the animals. We strongly advise you not to visit this park. In this so-called "cuddle farms" it is unclear what happens to the cubs when they are older and no longer suitable for the proposed activities. Rather ask us for one of the better alternatives. You cannot book this activity via South Africa Specialist and the below text is for your information only.

Between the two major cities Pretoria and Johannesburg you will find the Lion Park where you can meet with lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras and many other wonderful animals. You can go on safari with your own car or go wildlife watching with an experienced guide. The Lion Park has vast grasslands and bushveld including giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, blesbok and springbok. In separate enclosed areas of land carnivores are kept.

You can choose to drive your own car through the park or to go with a guide in a safari vehicle. The guides are all well trained and can tell you a lot about the different animals that you encounter along the way. You can drive through the grasslands and bushveld searching for the various antelopes, giraffes, zebras, etc. Then you come the parts of the park where there are lions, cheetahs and wild dogs. A night safari (after sunset) is allowed only with a guide.

The park has its own "cub world" where you can see the young animals. You may pet the animals and take a picture with them. The park has a souvenir shop, kiosk, bar, restaurant (on Sundays and public holidays there is a braai lunch) and there are picnic areas.

Opening hours:
The park is open daily from 08:30 to 21:00 in summer (September - April) and in the winter months (May - August) from 08:30 to 20:00.

The game drives with an experienced guide place on Monday - Friday at 09:30, 11:30 and 14:30. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays the game drives leave at 09:30, 11:30, 13:30, 14:30 and 15:30. The evening game drive departs at 18:30. A game drive takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
