Knysna Elephant Park

Please note: parks that offer elephant rides and shows where the elephants do tricks, do not have the welfare of the elephant as a top priority. To teach an elephant tricks and to get the animal as far as to carry people on his back, hard training is necessary. Young elephants are taken away from their mother and by means of pain stimuli learned the desired (unnatural) behaviour. The elephants stay in small spaces and they do not have enough social interaction with peers. We do not recommend you to take part in such activities. The Knysna Elephant Park has 12 domesticated elephants. These are orphans rescued from the Kruger Park. It's possible to take a ride on the back of an elephant or a walk with these behemoths. You can also be brought to the elephants to touch and feed them. If you still have not had enough, you can rent rooms in the luxurious Elephant Boma. Here you can almost sleep next to them. The park is located between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.

Daily 'Be touched by an elephant' tours start every half hour between 08:30 and 16:00. You will be welcomed by our guides. After a short introduction and video presentation, you visit the elephants. You may touch these particular animals, feed them (buckets with feed costs R40 per bucket) and photograph them. There are no fences, so nothing stands in your way to get close to these amazing giants.

An Elephant Back Safari is a wonderful experience. Up to 2 people per trip. Between September and April the back safaris are from 07:00 to 08:30 and from 16:00 to 17:30. From May - August the safari leaves at 07:00 to 08:30 and 16.00 to 17:30. If the third person is a child under 8 years, we try to arrange something, but this is always negotiable. In consultation there is sometimes the possibility to take a ride, for example, with 3 adults, but this then takes place in the very early morning and never at the fixed times.

Rather not on the back of an elephant, but follow their footsteps, which can also be done with a walk with the elephants. It is something that will leave a great impression on you. These walking safaris leave at the same time as the back safaris.

A private safari during sunrise or sunset with elephants as pets is an unforgettable experience. You can choose in advance whether you want to walk or to take a ride on the back of the elephant. During the safari you unfortunately cannot change your mind. This is obviously a very special safari!
