City Kleinmond

Kleinmond is located on the beautiful coastal road to the Garden Route between Gordon's Bay and Hermanus in the Western Cape. Coming from Gordon's Bay the Kogelberg Mountains pretty much ends here. Between the mountains and the ocean there is the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, a protected area where about 1,600 different plants but also wild like Leopard, Klipspringer, otters, dassies, baboons, falcons and various types of eagles are protected. Further, you may see or hear some rare frogs...

The area is particularly popular because of its beaches and dunes, the fantastic views, the mountains and hiking trails, and it is also a great place to spot whales between May and December. As allowed in all coastal towns on the South African coast you can only fish with a license and sailing is possible in the marsh lagoon where you can encounter lots of different birds. Around 1860 everyone began to see farmers from Kleinmond backlands used Kleinmond as a favorite vacation spot and so it grew into a place with plenty of holiday homes on the Sandown Bay and a street with little shops and restaurants. From ceramics to antiques but also beautiful arts and crafts are for sale here.

In 1902 at the Palmiet beach a Norwegian ship (Gustav Adolf) sank and a portion of the wood is used for the 2nd and 3rd holiday home in Kleinmond and other pieces of wood can be found in the crosses placed at the memorial down at the Palmiet path which leads to the parking and camping grounds in Kleinmond. In this environment, in 1928 the book of the famous African writer D. F. Malherbe; Hans-die-Skipper arose and you can visit the house.

In the vicinity you will find the beautiful and instructive Harold Porter Botanical Gardens and the breeding grounds of the Jackass Penguin colony at Stoney Point.
