City Kalk Bay

Kalk Bay is a fishing village on the coast of False Bay in the Western Cape Province. Beautifully situated between the ocean and the mountains of limestone from which the name of the village is derived. It is against the backdrop of the immense city of Cape Town.

Kalk Bay is easily accessible by railway, it is a great way of travel with great views and in some places the track is really just meters away from the Atlantic Ocean. "The Kalk Bay Reef" is an important sport and meeting place for surfers. Heavy waves and shallow waters can be found here on days when the South-Easter is blowing, which is often. Those days when the sea is too rough you cannot go by a water taxi, but otherwise it's a beautiful trip from Kalk Bay to the waterfront of Simon's Town. (Departure point is at Kalky's Fish and Chips shop)

In the mountains you will find caves made famous by the books of Sir Walter Scott. The "Ronan's Well" is not only mentioned in one of his books but even bears the title of a book. Of course you can visit the caves, but there will be a hiking trip before!

Welcoming foreign shops, surfers, fishermen there that go out in the tide in ungodly hours and whales swim along the coastline in the right season. They are the biggest attractions of the fishing village. Stroll along the antiques and hippie shops, looking for unusual handcrafted souvenirs and land in one of the good restaurants. If we can give you a hint; visit those that are advertised with "the Catch of the Day"! And ask the locals for a good tip...

Kalk Bay has grown into one of the trendiest places in Cape Town, where hospitality and nightlife, art, theater and architecture go hand in hand.

In Kalk Bay, you can walk to the caves, go sea fishing, surfing and of course enjoy watching people from the pavement or go shopping in the most special shops of the Western Cape.
