City Jeffrey's Bay

Jeffrey's Bay is located on the Garden Route in the Eastern Cape about 70 kilometers west of Port Elizabeth. It has views of St. Francis Bay in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, which makes Jeffrey's Bay is a great vacation place.

Once this area belonged to the San and later to the Khoi-San people and because they roamed about the beach, they were known as "Sandpipers". In the area you can get some San rock paintings. The indigenous population has long ceased to exist in the country driven by the Dutch explorers.

The discoverers have given way to the surfers who come together from around the world to enjoy sun, sea and golden beaches and the legendary waves. It is one of the best surfing locations in the world and each year you will find the International Billabong surf competition here.

For beginner kite surfers this is also a good location and next to waves and wind, there are plenty of instructors who will teach you the intricacies. And with beautiful waves, clear water and a lovely temperature it is the place where not only surfers but also dolphins also feel very much at home...

The dunes are perfect for sandboarding and also for this there are instructors to teach you. Something that is great fun for young and old! The kids will also love to spend a few hours in the Supertubes and the mini golf course.

But besides surfing, there are also other water activities and hiking along Dolphin Beach. Go looking for beautiful shells, which is something definitely enjoyable for the whole family. This beach has a Blue Flag status which means that it is clean and safe and is recommended for families. Swimming and sunbathing under the South African sun, what could be better!

Between June and December is the place to see the Southern Right Whale and the Humpback whales swim past on their way to warmer waters. Occasionally engaged Orcas and Bryde's Whales are seen but that is also very special. The bottlenose and humpback dolphins are often seen guest here and can also be seen throughout the year, playing in the waves.

The wonderful climate, the sea, dunes, Bushveld and forests provide a rich bird life in and around Jeffrey's Bay.  So far 450 different species of feathered friends have been found here. A real bird lover will take his binoculars and hat and go and enjoy him/herself immensely.

In and around Jeffrey's on both sides of the river, there are a number of protected natural areas. The Kabeljous and Seekoei Estuaries and the Norwegian Gorge nature reserve are here, so even if you do not like surfing ... enjoying spectacular nature you can still do here.

The village offers numerous restaurants from 'take-away' to chic and there are coffee shops and shops and schools where you can find instructors for diving, surfing and sandboarding and of course you will find surf shops!

Every year there is a shell festival, but if you are not there in that period, you can visit the Museum Collection. There is also a surf museum, because where it is a true surfers' paradise, and it is something that should not be missed. Here you will find history on this hugely popular sport.

Another popular sport is golf and lovers of this sport come here into its own. In Jeffrey's Bay itself you will find the 9-hole Jeffrey's Bay Golf Club, but you want more holes on different courses you can move to 2 golf courses in St Francis Bay and five golf courses in Port Elizabeth.

Jeffrey's Bay is also on the transition road to the Tsitsikamma National Park and the beautiful Garden Route; it is located near Port Elizabeth. If you are near downtown and if you love the Big Five or better yet the Big 7 then you are just a few steps from the Addo Elephant National Park.
