Featherbed Nature Reserve

Knysna is situated in the Western Cape Province of the Indian Ocean and is part of the famous Garden Route. The warm ocean water flowing between two massive sandstone cliffs of the Knysna Lagoon inside and these cliffs are called 'The Heads'. The 'Head' on the west side is occupied by the beautiful Featherbed Nature Reserve. This reserve is only accessible by a boat ride across the lagoon.

The main purpose of this reserve is to preserve the beauty of nature around Knysna. There live some rare animals in the reserve, including the Knysna Loerie with its green feathers and blue duiker, the smallest antelope species in the world. For the duiker there is a special breeding program in the reserve set up to support the survival of this rare antelope.

The number of visitors of the 150-hectare reserve is limited and only in conjunction with one of the expert guides. A popular excursion to this paradise on earth is the Featherbed Eco Experience. You will brought be by boat across the lagoon to the Western Head dangers; there is a tour guide through the reserve. The guide informs among others about the flora and fauna in the area and the history. Optionally, you can have a walk / hike taking about 2.2 kilometres. The route takes you through the green forest, along the beautiful coastline and small caves where the Khoi-Khoi people hid in earlier times. Keep your eyes open for animals on land and also look into the water. This tour departs in the morning at 10:00 and is including an extensive buffet lunch in the lovely open-air restaurant overlooking the water, and at 14:30 without lunch (reservations are recommended).
