City Calitzdorp

Driving along the Route 62 cannot be missed. Calitzdorp is to the western side of the Klein Karoo in the Western Cape Province, perhaps better known as the Port wine capital of South Africa.

The village is surrounded by mountains, the challenging Swartberg Mountains in the north, the Rooi Berge in the south and from the Huisrivier Pass in the west it gives a special climate where summers are hot and winters with many sunny days but very cold nights. It is wherein the peaks of the Swartberg Mountains are often covered with snow. You can drive through the wonderful trails the mountains has and always be amazed by breathtaking views.

It is not surprising that Calitzdorp has been declared the Port wine capital because the climate of Calitzdorp and the Douro Valley in Portugal is similar on several points, it's hot and dry here and the soil is poor and that makes for very high quality port. The highly alcoholic wine is made in several local wineries here, which are worth a visit especially if you have a port wine tasting! In summer the thermometer reaches 40 degrees here easily, but sea breezes in the afternoon is great for refreshment. Every year in May they have the village port-wine festival.

Cold winters or hot summers, it's always nice to relax in the natural hot springs of Calitzdorp. Besides having fun in the warm water, it also has a therapeutic effect. The spa is situated just outside Calitzdorp on the way to Oudtshoorn and you must go this way to make it and it is beautiful in the backlands of the Klein Karoo.

The Klein Karoo is the land of ostriches, wild flowers, vines, birds and mountains. It is the peaceful surroundings, the beautiful scenery and ancient architecture that will surprise you and it will occupy you if you are staying here. A beautiful gallery and the small museums, the sandstone church and the various wine cellars provide a few lovely relaxing days.

You can go hiking, fishing, bird-watching, 4x4 or horseback. You can end the final day with a delicious port or dessert wine from a local wine cellar.
