Backpacking

Is South Africa suitable for backpacking?

South Africa is called the world in one country. There is no country in the world where you can find so much diversity. A tour of South Africa is therefore a special experience.

In South Africa you will find mountains, nature reserves, wildlife parks, Winelands, beaches, rugged coastlines, waterfalls, breath-taking scenery and rolling hills. You can enjoy culture, wildlife, adventure sports, but also endless shopping in the many large shopping malls. Because there are also another 11 different languages spoken and there are many people living is South Africa also known as the rainbow nation.

An excellent way to explore the country is with the Baz Bus and nights are spent in backpacker accommodation. Of course you can tour with a rental car and stay in the backpackers accommodations. This of course gives you more freedom to stop along the way and do some sightseeing. Or use a luxury touring car, Greyhound or Intercape to make longer distances between cities in southern Africa (for more information see: Transfer by coach and BazBuz).

There is a booklet with backpacker's accommodation, mostly on what you can carry and use on the move to find a place to stay and to book. But it is also possible to reserve accommodations through us beforehand. In high season it is wise to avoid disappointment locally. Budget B&B's and guesthouses we can of course arrange if desired.

Long Street in Cape Town is the place to be for backpackers. This is where locals and tourists come together. During the day you can stroll along the many boutiques, souvenir shops and restaurants and you can go relax in the evening. Tip: The roof of The Waiting Room, Fiction bar or if you like live music Zula bar. Longstreet offers every vacationer, young and old, a fantastic night out. Long Street has several backpacker accommodations. Reservations can be made through South Africa Specialist with no booking fees since the property is officially registered.

Best time:
The busiest season is the South African summer (December to April). People visit South Africa in this period from all around the world. But there is also plenty to do outside of these months. For wild animal areas like in the north (Kruger) it can be the best to travel in the South African winter between May and October.

Safety:
There will many stories about the insecurity in South Africa. It is certainly true that in some neighbourhoods you'd better not go especially after dark. Do not go into a township on your own. Use common sense at all times! Especially in larger cities, it can sometimes feel unsafe. However, this applies to many major cities in the world.
