Amakhala Game Reserve

East of Addo National Park and adjacent to the famous Shamwari is the Amakhala Game Reserve: 7000 hectares of beautiful Bushveld, rivers, valleys, lawn and natural fauna. The Big Five is found in this park as well as many species of goats including gemsbok. Right through the Reserve runs the Bushman River exuberant colour and life to the country. The river offers the possibility of canoeing and cosy sundowner cruises.

Amakhala is the Xhosa word for many aloes (you'll see this plant frequently from Port Elizabeth) and has a number of lodges in its reserve. Until 1999 these were farms that were maintaining their business with sheep and cattle. From the end of the last century the fences have been removed, the big game and has reintroduced the country's future as a Game Reserve. The lodges are excellent converted into comfortable and luxurious accommodations. The tractors have been replaced by safari jeeps which are now being driven. The farmhand has now a certified ranger who takes you on a walking safari so guests can learn the tricks of nature.

The Amakhala Game Reserve has a knowledge centre where kids can discover to learn more about nature and the environment.

In addition to the knowledge of the team, Amakhala also focuses on the ecological restoration of the area. The rangers are continuously trained so that their knowledge is up to date. Elephants are tracked using a GPS system and there will be ongoing field research. From Addo Elephant Park mature bulls will be moved to Amakhala.

Amakhala Game Reserve is highly regarded in South Africa. For example, the four and five star lodges of TGCSA (very high-quality label), the Eastern Cape Parks and Amakhala Tourism also named best private game reserve in the Eastern Cape!
